My grandfather was the consummate pragmatist. Born in the eighteen eighties, his credo was "you do with what you've got". And, he did, with what he had. Most of my known ancestors did the same. I changed the random quote, not long ago. My version is not so different, but reflects a slightly different view from a different generation:
Try harder to think better. Do the best you can, with what you have, and KNOW.
Grandfather had little of the first, and less of the second. He did alright, under the circumstances.
The characteristic of a quote is that you take it as it is, so I cannot restructure it, for than it's not a quote any longer (but a mini blog). Moreiver, Your a and b show that it was good to put it here, for it makes you think, even though it makes you think what to think.

Idea: restructure the quote, such that it becomes two, without the but.
