Well, let us hope so. That was a long time ago, and, presumably, after sapiens became conscious. After Neanderthal and Cro-mag. I don't know when consciousness emerged. Insofar as we cannot decide what it IS, I don't know where the meaning lies. Maybe that is the point? Sorta like other inexplicable stuff? Philosophic material...
